The North Omaha Trail Project

by VIVIAN CANIGLIA

The North Omaha Trail is set to begin construction in the spring/summer of 2021, with the aim of connecting North Omaha to the North Downtown area of Omaha. The project was developed from the City of Omaha Master Plan, the North Omaha Development Project, and many other resources, to create a local and necessary north-south route for transportation, recreation, and support of public health.

The trail connects to Paxton Boulevard Trail along with integral North Omaha neighborhood locations to lead to the downtown area. The goal is to build community participation and support health and mobility within Omaha. A recreational trail provides a neighborhood with space for community events and communication between neighbors, as well as an opportunity for safe commuting. Culxr House, The Union for Contemporary Art, and more art-central spaces within North Omaha will be featured on the trail to promote engagement.

The route accesses multiple community resources and locations such as:

  • The North 24th Street Improvement District

  • The Kennedy Square Redevelopment

  • Fair Deal Market Place

  • King Science and Technology Management

  • North High School

  • The North Omaha Transit Center

A convenient connector such as the North Omaha Trail, gives easy access for community members to engage in physical activity such as biking or walking. In addition to accessible exercise, the trail connects the North Omaha neighborhoods with the growing metropolitan area. It can support economic growth through job opportunities, access to community resources, and local businesses.

The North Omaha Trail Project currently features a community input survey for the public to provide feedback on features such as art, lighting, history, and more.
