the Omaha Police Department announced a new tow sweep operation to begin January 11, 2021.

The aim is targeted toward unregistered, unlicensed, and dead storage vehicles.

The sweep targets these vehicles and will tow any unlicensed cars that do not have proper in-transit stickers or are considered dead storage. Dead storage was outlined in the report to be vehicles that have not moved over 48 hours and are parked on the street. In addition, cars parked in prohibited locations or blocking sidewalks are susceptible to being ticketed or towed. Per the report, targeted vehicles and car parts located on private property will also be targeted if their storage violates city code and will receive a ‘Notice of Nuisance’ requiring the violation be fixed within 10 days before further action is taken.

Numerous violations are subject to enforcement during the sweep, including:

  • Section 18-42: vehicles unlawfully parked, abandoned, parked, or stored  and considered a nuisance in violation of city code

  • Section 36-156: vehicles stopping, standing, or parking in unlawful and prohibited spaces such as: intersections, crosswalks, safety zones (marked areas set aside for the use of pedestrians), within 30 feet of an intersection, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, on sidewalks, double parking, any place with official signs prohibiting parking, and in bike lanes

  • Section 36-161: vehicles parked continuously in the same block for 48 hours or longer on any street

  • Section 36-170: unlicensed and unregistered vehicles parked on public streets

  • Section 55-742: personal vehicles parked on residential lots, pertinent portions include that parking must be upon paved surfaces such as driveways, required to be in a well-maintained state and more

NOISE reached out to the Omaha Police Department’s Public Information Office for more information on pertinent violations. Chapter 18, 36 and 55 outline parking ordinances specifically and sections listed above are the most likely violations to be enforced.
