Big Mama's Ready to Serve at The Highlander

Gladys Harrison, dubbed “Captain” at Big Mama’s, was wiping down a stainless steel appliance when she spoke with NOISE after-hours, about the grand opening underway during the first part of the day. Having closed at 2:00 pm Tuesday, Harrison explained, “What I accomplished today was fulfilling my mom’s dream of that transition from her original restaurant on Bedford Street, to this modern, quick service, wonderful space that you can come and have a good meal and talk to some folks, and a few weeks even have a cocktail.”

The facility is part of Seventy-Five North’s community development, which continues to grow in the Highlander neighborhood,. WOWT 6 News reports that Seventy-Five North has made “a positive change to this neighborhood” with their non-profit model.

“We’re not the only restaurant that will be here,” Harrison added. “There will be another restaurant called Picos, and they are going to serve street tacos and pizza. And there will be The highlander Bar and Grill where you can get a cocktail, and burgers and chicken strips.” The seating area for customers is called “Dining Hall” without the definite article “the.”
